Mike Hartman Interview

Graphic: Black Glue album cover

April 6, 1999 - On March 5, 1999 I interviewed former David Lee Roth Band guitarist, Mike Hartman. The chat lasted for approximately two and a half hours, with topics ranging from rehearsals with Roth to Cystic Fibrosis. Parts 1 and 2 of the chat transcript are now available exclusively from the Van Halen News Desk.

Van Halen Update

Graphic: Van Halen

April 16, 1999 - As you can probably tell from the lack of recent updates, news from the Van Halen camp is quite hard to come by at the moment. The official Van Halen site had a short update yesterday, confirming that the band were in the studio rehearsing and cutting demos.

We've attempted to find out the song titles that may appear on the new album, but have been unsuccessful so far. We will continue to try.

This album may be the most important in the band's 20+ year career. Sales of Van Halen III were the lowest of any Van Halen album to date. Many critics gave the album less than favourable reviews.

Nobody knows what direction the band will take with their next effort, but we can be sure that Van Halen will give it 110% and put out the best performance possible.

Roth To Play Festival

Graphic: David Lee Roth

April 17, 1999 - It looks like the wait may finally be over for David Lee Roth fans. News broke today that Diamond Dave and his DLR Band have been booked to play the Sweden Rock Festival. (Van Halen were scheduled to appear at the same show last year, but were unable to play due to Alex Van Halen's arm injury.) The festival will take place on June 11 and 12, 1999.

The Sweden Rock Festival web site is not written in English so we were unable to get many details from it, but we did manage to extract the names of the David Lee Roth band line-up advertised to play the gig:

  • Vocals: David Lee Roth
  • Guitar: Bart Walsh
  • Bass: Marco Mendoza
  • Drums: Ray Luzier

Bart Walsh is currently the guitar player in the LA-based Van Halen Tribute band, the Atomic Punks. Marco Mendoza, a member of a recent Thin Lizzy lineup, has worked with everyone from John Sykes to former DLR Band guitarist Mike Hartman. Ray Luzier played drums on Roth's latest studio effort. He also plays drums with Freak Power Ticket.

Roth Tour Announced

Graphic: David Lee Roth

April 30, 1999 - Davidleeroth.com has announced the long awaited 1999 David Lee Roth world tour! Check our 1999 Roth Tour page for the complete list of dates.

Diamond Dave will be headlining three dates in Europe before heading to the US to fill the opening slot for the Bad Company tour.

As was the case with the 1998 Van Halen world tour, readers who attend the shows are invited to submit reviews, set lists, photos and especially videos! The first five reviews we receive will be published.

There is still no official word on the DLR Band line-up, but we believe Ray Luzier (Drums) and Bart Walsh (ex-Atomic Punks, guitar) are locked in.
