Roth's Guitarist?
September 2, 1998 - Today is the 14th anniversary of
David Lee Roth's last live show with Van Halen. Right now, things are very quiet
in the Roth camp. Fans are always eager to know what his next move will be, but
Dave is keeping his cards very close to his chest at the moment.
Dave's fans are probably aware that John Lowery and Michael Hartman have
moved on since handling the majority of the guitar work on the DLR Band
album. Following the departure of Hartman and Lowery from the DLR
Band, speculation and rumor is running rampant in chat rooms and mailing
lists over who David Lee Roth is going to employ as his new guitarist.
Roth himself has indicated that he is not interested in dredging up the
axe-slingers of the 80's and, in fact, chose Lowery and Hartman because
he felt that they were capable of carrying the future of guitar playing
well into the next millenium.
With Lowery and Hartman out of the picture, one primary contender has
emerged from the pack - Los Angeles based guitar player Eric Zimmermann.
Zimmermann is currently recording a project with David Lee Roth band
alumni Gregg Bissonette and Matt Bissonette.

Dave Rumours
September 11, 1998 - You know, sometimes this Internet thing
can be a real pain in the ass. News, good and bad, can spread quickly via the World
Wide Web. It's got to the stage where people expect the news within minutes of
it happening.
The Internet is also the most efficient way for rumours to spread.
Last night the 1998 MTV Video Music awards took place. Remember back in
1996 when the original Van Halen lineup reunited for the awards show and received
a standing ovation? It seems like only yesterday.
If you were a visitor to this site back then you may remember my prediction
that Van Halen would appear with David Lee Roth at
the awards. Early rumours suggested that the band would perform
live, but we know now that was too good to be true.
The reason I'm bringing up the 1996 MTV Awards again (a sore topic
with many DLR fans) is because there were rumours doing the rounds
last week that the original David Lee Roth band were going to reunite
for the 1998 awards. You heard it right, the buzz on the chat rooms and
mailing lists was that Roth, Vai, Sheehan and Bissonnette were reforming.
The only problem with this rumour is, like the many others that start
on the Internet, it wasn't true. The closest thing we got to David Lee
Roth or Van Halen content on the MTV awards last night was John Lowery's
(ex-DLR Band) performance with his latest gig, Marilyn Manson.
Dave is keeping a very low profile right now. His web site,
www.davidleeroth.com, hasn't
been updated since August 5. Rest assured, Dave is not sitting on his
ass waiting for things to happen.
There will always be rumours on the Internet. Just remember, take each
one with a grain of salt, and note the source.
Hartman Interview
September 14, 1998 - On May 29 this year, guitarist Michael
Hartman announced to the world
via the Van Halen News Desk that he had departed from
the David Lee Roth band due to creative differences. Since then, Mike has
been hard at work in the studio recording his solo album, Black Glue and Other
Oddities.
The album, partly recorded at Steve Vai's studio, features other artists such as
Gregg and Matt Bissonette, John Christ (Danzig) and Ray Luzier of the DLR Band.
This past weekend, Tim Jones
spoke candidly with Michael Hartman about his work with David Lee Roth, and got
the lowdown on Mike's new solo album which is due out in January.
Special thanks to Tim Jones. Check out Tim's web site:
ROTHGATE
Hurricane Georges
September 20, 1998 - Tonight's Van Halen gig at the Roberto
Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico will be postponed due to the
threat of Hurricane Georges. Forecasts say it will cross the island from side to
side tomorrow, Monday 21, with winds nearing 150 MPH.
As you would expect, fans are bitterly disappointed about the cancellation.
Promoters are currently trying to negotiate another date. The local
press are reporting that the replacement gig may happen within a week,
depending on the hurricane of course. The cancelled shows in
Brazil, originally scheduled for next weekend, may prove to be a
Godsend for Puerto Ricans!
Thanks to Edgardo Soto and Joel Ortiz in Puerto Rico for the update!
VH in Top 100 Albums
September 25, 1998 - Four Van Halen albums have been
honoured in
Wall of Sound's Top 100 Albums poll. Van Halen (1978)
placed 7th in the list of the top 100 albums of the 70s. 1984 came
8th in the 80s list.
In the overall standings for the top 100 albums of all time, Van Halen's
self-titled debut album finished 31st. 1984 faired even better, coming
in at 28th.
There was another category in the voting called "write-ins". This allowed
participants to vote on albums that weren't in the default list of
nominations. Van Halen faired very well in the 80s write-in section, with Fair
Warning coming in at #10. 5150, the band's first album with
Sammy Hagar, did even better by placing 5th.
