Chart History: A Little Ain't Enough (1991)

February 9, 2001 - Ten years ago this week, David Lee Roth's A Little Ain't Enough peaked at #18 on the Billboard album chart.

Dave's third full-length solo album featured Jason Becker and Steve Hunter on guitar, Matt Bissonette on bass, Gregg Bissonette on drums and Brett Tuggle on keyboards. It was produced by Bob Rock, recorded at Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver, Canada and released in the USA on January 15, 1991.

A Little Ain't Enough was certified gold by the RIAA on April 11, 1991. Gold certification is awarded to albums that have shipped 500,000 copies. Between the inception of SoundScan in mid-1991 and January 2000, the album had sold 330,448 copies. I don't have any data to indicate sales between the release date and the inception of SoundScan, but if the gold certification is used to approximate sales, it's safe to say that the album has sold at least 830,000 copies.

It's widely believed that the album will gain a platinum award (shipment of 1 million copies in the USA) if it is presented for certification by Warner Bros. This looks unlikely, as the album is now out of print.

The other way to look at the situation is as follows: if the album has shipped 1 million copies (ie. should be platinum) but has only sold 830,000, there are enough copies out there in stores to warrant taking it out of print.

The whole "ALAE Controversy" will probably never be resolved, but it's certainly an interesting story!

2000 has come and gone, and I don't have to tell you that it was probably the most frustrating year ever in the life of Van Halen fans. "No news is good news" got old real fast.
