2003 Year In Review And Goodbye
December 29, 2003
2003 has been and gone and it has been another year without music from Van Halen, the band.
For me, the highlight of the year was the release of David Lee Roth's latest solo album, Diamond Dave.
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it has been the most played album by far on my iPod. If it's Dave's
destiny to never return to Van Halen, I'd be very satisfied if he continued his solo career releasing albums
like this.
Sammy Hagar released his Live Hallelujah album and The Long Road to Cabo DVD. I have to give credit
to Sammy - he continues to treat his fans with the utmost respect and gives them what they want - plenty of
live shows and albums. The DVD is fantastic and I'd recommend it to any music fan whether you're a fan of
Sammy's or not. One slight criticism - even though it's a documentary, it would have been close to a perfect music
DVD (ie. up there with Led Zeppelin's) if there was an option to watch it as a live music DVD, without cutting into
the songs. I haven't looked that closely but there may have been spece left on the second DVD to do this. No
biggy though, it's still an excellent release and a treat for Sammy's fans. If only every band documented
their tours this way.
It was great to see Michael Anthony having so much fun on Sammy's DVD. If things never eventuate with Van Halen,
at least Mike can say he didn't sit around waiting for things to happen.
Eddie Van Halen did a telephone interview a few weeks ago and claimed he had 10 albums worth of material.
This is great news. We'd like to hear some of it one day. In the meantime, the music DVD market is screaming
for some vintage Van Halen performances. There's hope though because Led Zeppelin released their DVD
and How The West Was Won 3CD set this year. Surely Van Halen has some quality film in the vaults somewhere
that could be released on DVD. It could be the re-introduction they need to kickstart their career again.
For the record, I don't believe for one minute that Sammy is back in Van Halen. I've been wrong in the
past though and will gladly be wrong again if it means there's new Van Halen music.
That's about it for another year, and for this site for good. Thanks again to everyone who regularly
visited the site over the years. Let's hope 2004 will see the return of Van Halen. I'll still be
around in the online Van Halen community, at
VHForums.com,
DiamondDavidLeeRoth.com and the VHML.
